Everything you need to know about ESE lightning protection and LPS Designer Pro
Lightning Protection & Standards
LPS Designer Pro applies the IEC 62305 series (IEC 62305-1 and IEC 62305-2:2024) and the NF C 17-102:2011 standard for Early Streamer Emission lightning rods (ESE). The protection level calculation method (LPL I to IV) is in compliance with Annex E of NF C 17-102:2011.
An ESE rod is an active lightning rod that emits an upward streamer before surrounding simple rods thanks to its triggering device. This gives it a larger protection radius Rp than a Franklin rod of the same height. LPS France manufactures the ELLIPS range (models 1.0 to 1.4) with triggering advances of 10 to 60µs.
LPS France offers two ESE rod ranges: Ellips (non-connected) and Paraton@ir® (IoT-connected). ELLIPS models differ by Δt: ELLIPS 1.0 = 10µs · ELLIPS 1.2 = 25µs · ELLIPS 1.3 = 45µs · ELLIPS 1.4 = 60µs. Paraton@ir® offers the same Δt (P10/P25/P45/P60) with added Contact@ir System connectivity for real-time monitoring. The higher the Δt, the larger the Rp at the same mast height.
LPS Designer Pro's algorithms are based on the normative formulas published in IEC 62305-2:2024 and NF C 17-102:2011.
Using the Software
Use the Free plan for a residential, office or no-regular-occupancy building whose height is strictly under 30 m. Electrical and telecom networks are fixed as overhead. One PDF export per month is included.
Yes. Studio is included with Expert or available as a standalone plan. It supports multiple ESE rods and complex or multi-building designs.
After centering the map on your address, click on your building in the satellite view. LPS Designer Pro automatically detects the building footprint (length, width) via Mapbox. You then only need to enter the height to complete the calculation.
Yes. LPS Designer Pro uses worldwide ground flash density data (Nsg) from NASA and international lightning detection networks, in compliance with IEC 62305-2:2024. The service covers the entire globe.
Subscriptions & Pricing
Free covers three fixed cases: residential, office or no regular occupancy, with height <30 m and overhead networks. Initial applies the complete FD C 17-108 workflow with all parameters available. Pro adds NF C 17-102:2011 and IEC 62305:2024. Expert includes the Pro calculators and Studio. Studio is also available standalone.
Yes. You can cancel from your profile. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Your data and projects remain accessible until that date.
Free only asks for the building type — residential, office or no regular occupancy — and a height strictly under 30 m. The other standard characteristics are fixed, including overhead electrical and telecom networks. It provides the protection level, ESE choice, Rp radius and a contact form. Initial is a separate offer covering the complete FD C 17-108 workflow.
Account & Technical
With an account (even Initial), your projects are saved in our secure database (Supabase). Without an account, data is stored in your browser and may be lost if you clear browsing data.
No. LPS Designer Pro is a web service that requires an internet connection for ground flash density Nsg calculations (satellite data), geolocation, and project synchronization.
